Agapanthus
These are lilies which are native to South Africa. They are easy to cultivate and some species are deciduous in all climates while others are evergreen. They grow best in warm, sunny conditions with a moderately fertile soil, are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, except poor drainage. They make excellent container plants . They are available year-round and found in the markets within Kenya.

 

Ammi majus
Fine feathery foliage with loose flower heads like Queen Anne's lace. Good filler in bouquets and a charming cottage garden plant. Snowflake is the variety used by florists. These are annuals.

Asclepia sp . (Moby Dick, Milk weed)
The flowers can be used as filler for cutflower arrangements. It comes in intense gold, scarlet, and deep red shades and works well with sunflowers. It was developed for greenhouse and outdoor summer cutflower production, but is also a good garden plant for attracting butterflies.

Calla lilies
Native to South Africa and are mainly grown for their attractive, large flowers, which are usually produced in the spring and summer. Calla Lilies or Arum Lilies, as they are commonly known, are used for decoration at Easter and throughout the spring and early summer months. Regular gardeners may have them bloom in winter, spring or early summer .

 

Carthamus
Suited for both cutflower and dried flower arrangements. Round leaved and less thorny than other varieties, it has orange, yellow, and cream flowers. Dried flowers are used as a food coloring or dye for clothes and cosmetics.

 

 

Crocosmia - Crocosmia crocosmiiflora, Common name: montbretia, Family: Iridaceae
This plant is originally from South Africa. Crocosmia produces several flowers per spike. There are small-flowering and large-flowering varieties. The leaves are sword-shaped. Crocosmia is better known as Montbretia. If planted in autumn, covering is necessary for at least the first year. After a year they are fairly winter hardy. They can be found year-round within Kenya.

Eryngium - Rattlesnake master, Button snakeroot
It has yucca-like foliage, resembling its desert counterparts, is stiff and stands erect in even the most blinding heat. Ideal for gardens as specimens or in small groups, this species will add texture and color to almost any perennial border. It can be found year-round within Kenya.

Molucella laevis - Bells of Ireland
The bracts are a matte apple green with a tiny white to light pink bloom in the center. There are varied shades of green which forms an attractive arrangement when paired with other flowers. Interesting plants with spikes of green bell shaped flowers each 5cm/2" in diameter. Turns light brown when dried. It is an annual and can be found within Kenya.

Ornithogalum sp. Liliaceæ (Lily Family)
A very easy and adaptable plant it is native to S. Africa. The plant grows better in well drained soil and prefers some direct sun but also thrives in very hot, sunny and dry locations.

 

Tuberose - Polianthus tuberosa
Tuberoses are fragrant white flowers. They tend to have pink and green in the bud but the flower itself is mostly white. It can be found within Kenya.
